Jackals Rest

We designed Jackals Rest as a sustainable, off-grid retreat for a client on Highlands Guest Farm near Montagu.

Jackals Rest

The site shaped the design from the beginning. We positioned the structures to follow the slope, create privacy between the bedrooms and main living area, and make the most of the breathtaking views towards the Anysberg mountains. The pool and deck became a natural extension of this idea: a place to pause, take in the view and feel immersed in the setting.

One of the key decisions was to manufacture the steel structure off-site and assemble it on the farm. This offered a durable, efficient solution for a remote location while minimising the impact of construction on site. Large double-glazed sliding doors, insulation, solar power and battery storage support the lodge’s fully off-grid operation, creating a space that is both comfortable and environmentally conscious.

Earthy tones, natural textures and bespoke details bring softness and warmth.

Working remotely called for careful planning and close coordination, especially around deliveries and site access. These considerations ultimately strengthened the project, encouraging a thoughtful and collaborative approach at every stage.

We took a full turnkey approach to Jackals Rest, shaping every aspect of the project, from spatial planning and interiors to bespoke furniture, joinery, lighting, textiles, landscaping and visual identity. The design balances the lodge’s clean steel structure with the warmth and character of the Klein Karoo. Rock cladding anchors the entrance and indoor living area, while raised walkways allow the natural terrain to continue beneath the buildings. Inside, earthy tones, natural textures and bespoke details bring softness and warmth, including dip-dyed fabrics inspired by the sunrise, ceramic vases that echo the surrounding colour palette, and custom furnishings.

Jackals Rest feels considered, grounded and personal, offering guests a slower, more connected way to experience life on the farm.
